Expeditions to South Africa

Cultural ProjectsOutposts have been running expeditions to South Africa since 1998. We have established links with excellent providers and are always striving to upgrade our programmes whilst keeping them affordable for all participants.”

We fervently believe that expeditions & trips should be an exciting blend of adventure travel, culture & history, treks and safaris, interaction with local people and voluntary or charity work. We have seen the wonderful and enriching results of expeditions that combine these elements, opening up people’s minds to a world of new experiences and giving them the opportunity to share them with like-minded people.

Although our expeditions are tailored to suit each group's requirements we ensure that our ethos is maintained.

Why go to South Africa?
South Africa is a treasure chest of unforgettable scenery, from lofty mountains to sun-baked deserts and dramatic coastlines washed by the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Its game viewing equals the best in Africa; where else can you find penguins, whales and elephants?

South Africa also has a vivid history. Apartheid ended in 1990 and the jailed ANC leader Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years of imprisonment. In the first democratic elections to be held in South Africa, Mandela became president in 1994. The story is told in the excellent museums in Johannesburg, by far the most vibrant of the country’s cities with a rich cultural heritage. Apartheid activist Archbishop Desmond Tutu named the newly integrated South Africa the ‘Rainbow Nation’. It is a fitting name for a country with 11 official languages and people of all colours, races and creeds, living in a vividly coloured and sculpted landscape.

From the majestic Drakensberg Mountains, a World Heritage Site, through to the tropical savannahs of Zululand where the "big five", elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo and leopard inhabit Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park, through to the brilliant coral reefs of the Indian Ocean that fringe the lakes and wetlands of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park and running north to Kosi Bay. This culturally rich and diverse area offers safaris, bush walks, battlefield tours, riding, fishing, hiking, camping, birding, diving, snorkeling, climbing, abseiling, white water rafting and cultural opportunities.

For many of our expeditions we favour the province of KwaZulu-Natal because the landscape is so varied and cuts down the time spent travelling. This enables us to keep the costs as affordable as possible whilst maintaining the quality and content. However, South Africa is a huge country and there are expedition opportunities throughout.

Cultural ProjectsCULTURAL
Outposts support a variety of community projects including an ongoing Project, ZULUFADDER, based in Eschowe. We carefully chose this charity in order that we might provide help and assistance at grass roots level. Zulufadder is AIDS related with real situations that need support. Our groups give their time (and much needed love) to AIDS orphans and their families, making both physical and financial contributions whilst participating in worthwhile projects. The charity or community project phase often proves a life changing and valuable section of each expedition.

ECOLOGICAL
Environmental Awareness Course. Professional game rangers teach bush crafts, animal behavior, spoor recognition, game conservancy management principles, anatomy, medicinal plants and their uses. Our Groups will be taken into close quarters with the sights, sounds and smells of South African bush, whilst being taught awareness and how to behave in the bush.

HISTORICAL
Battlefield tours. Guided tours of the famous battlefields of the Anglo Zulu War, Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana. Told by the best, these real stories, explained on the actual site give an amazing insight into the Zulu nation and how these battles made history, both in England and South Africa.
