We maintain the highest levels of safety to ensure that we are fully compliant with, and often exceed, industry standards expected of UK expedition companies, which are among some of the most stringent in the world.
BS8848 compliance - Outposts Ltd conforms to the British Standard 8848:2014 and as such all risk assessments and safe working practices adhere to this Standard. More information on the British Standard 8848 can be found on the BSI website.
24 hour back up - Outposts operates a 24 hour back up service. All our teams are equipped with a smartphone and satellite technology to reach us by any means. Any emergency procedures are co-ordinated from our UK head office.
Pre-expedition training - expeditioners and school staff attend two pre-expedition training sessions to ensure they are aware of any potential risks involved and for tactics to avoid incidents to be discussed.
Recces and in-country partnerships - We have a very well established network of in-country partners with whom we have been working for at leat 10 years. We undertake regular recces of all the destinations to ensure that nothing has changed without our knowledge.
Government advice monitoring - We always work in line with the latest advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth office and recommend you also keep yourself informed.
Experienced Expedition Leaders - All our expedition leaders have prior experience of leading expeditions and working with young people. They hold all the relevant qualifications for the activities included in the itinerary. They are all outdoor first aid trained.
Outposts Ltd will provide travel and medical insurance for all expeditioners for the duration of the expedition. This will cover repatriation, loss of equipment, in-country medical cover and cancellation for a genuine reason that falls within the terms of the policy. Copies of the insurance policy and cover will be made available. We have Public Liability to £10,000,000 and Employer’s Liability to £10,000,000 and can provide copies of our insurance certificates on request.
Outposts Ltd provides a comprehensive list of in-country hospitals and medical arrangements that are carried by Outposts Ltd expedition leaders; additionally the leaders all hold current First Aid certificates.
Our travel medical advisor is James Moore RN BSc (Hons) Dip TravMed Dip TN MFTM RCPS (Glasg) FRGS. Along with working as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner, James runs an independent travel clinic in Exeter and continues to provide advice and support for a number of expedition companies across the UK. He is a member of the Faculty of Travel Medicine and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. James attends the first of the pre-expedition training sessions to give all the relevant vaccination and health advice to expeditioners, their parents and leaders.
Every expedition is accompanied by an Expedition Leader and Assistant Leader as selected by the Board of Outposts Ltd, one will be male and one female. All Expedition Leaders have a contract and instructions provided by Outposts Ltd and will have met our strict criteria to qualify to lead an expedition with us. We pride ourselves in working with highly experienced and talented Expedition Leaders to ensure our groups get the most out of their expedition. The Expedition Leader is not only there to ensure the safety of the team but to facilitate activities designed to help expeditioners develop skills such as communication, independence and confidence.
